People need to realise volunteers can only do their best & that it is all voluntary work. Many volunteers have their own jobs & families also.A bit of respect shown goes a long way.
Keep up the great work Offaly SPCASO WHO DO "YOU" THINK "WE" ARE?
From the "tone" of calls made to the office number, the dog number & especially to the cat number it is very obvious that a large number of callers haven't a clue & couldn't care less who we are so long as "THEIR PROBLEMS ARE SOLVED."
"Good morning, ......... here,I'm a volunteer with Ospca."
THE WORD VOLUNTEER IS NEITHER HEARD NOR UNDERSTOOD NOR RESPECTED.
A volunteer is someone who gives their time, their efforts, their work, their labour,a space in their home, their heart & frequently from their pocket FREE OF CHARGE & WITHOUT PAY to help an animal in distress.
There are TWO WOMEN answering calls to the cat number.
There are TWO WOMEN answering calls to the dog number.
These four women carry these mobile Fons with them EVERYWHERE for a week on,week off for NOTHING.
These four women don't want praise nor thanks because they are doing this solely to try to help the animals but a bit of respect would go a long way.
"There's a kitten here in the ............ car park, you need to send someone to get it out of here ASAP" the caller clipped"
"NEED TO"? & " "SOMEONE"?
Really? That doesn't sound like a "REQUEST for help,it sounds more like an order, which it is.
(The kitten was collected in double quick time NOT because of the callers attitude but because the KITTEN needed help.)
What began more than 30 years ago and was then seen as a privilege when a volunteer answered a call & a "request" for help is no longer viewed as such but has become a DEMAND & is now being seen as "a right".......... & it's very off putting.
"Are ye not part of the county council? a caller asked when things weren't being done the way that best suited her rather than what was best for the animal.NO WE ARE NOT.
"I've been in contact with your colleagues in the Ispca......"
REALLY? ....... We are NOT a branch of the Ispca.
We are a SMALL,STAND ALONE,VOLUNTARY,RESCUE CHARITY,who are doing the very best we can under enormous pressure & excessive demands.
"I want to get my cat/dog neutered, when are ye getting the vouchers in?" IN? Really? In from where?
Do people not realise that VOUCHERS are PAID for out of the hard earned funds & don't come from some "magic machine." ???? & that our hard pressed treasurer keeps her finger on the calculator & her eye on the accounts as she tries to make sure we don't spend money than we haven't actually got in our funds.?
There are 7 women on the Ospca committee & they are as follows.
An amazing & very hard working treasurer who's diligence & skills manages to keep us afloat.
The four who carry the cat & dog Fons between them & two others. These committee members also double up as fosterers & record & paperwork keepers & general dogs bodies.
The huge amount of paperwork, record keeping & form filling that's involved in order to comply with & retain charity status is,( though absolutely necessary in order to provide accountability & transparency,) literally quite staggering
Then there are the FOSTERERS who are the backbone of Ospca's little charity because without these fosterers if we've no place to put the lost, confused, bewildered, terrified or frightened, sick or injured little creatures then we can't help them.
SO TO THOSE CALLING US WE SAY................
We're doing our best & We'll do our best to help for the "ANIMALS" sake.
WE DO NOT GIVE IN TO EMOTIONAL BLACKMAIL.......EVER!
& threatening "If ye don't come out I'll dump them"....( it's usually kittens.) If ye don't take them I'll have to have them put to sleep or drown them or worse..blackmail doesn't work.
Try the SPOONFUL OF SUGAR rather than the POUND OF SALT attitude.
Try to be nice, try to be kind,to be helpful,to be patient & try to remember that we few are doing our best, our very best to help & to save as many animals as we can & with your help & support we may be able to save more.
If you can & are able to then roll up your sleeves & help too.πŸ˜‰πŸ˜˜ xxxxx
