« This is our family pet. He was stolen yesterday close to Lidl on the Tullamore Rd, Birr. Multiple eye witnesses saw him being put in to a black BMW saloon car by a well dressed woman in her 50s approx with an English accent at 2.15pm on the 24/03. Herself and a man that stayed in the car then drove in Tullamore direction and turned up by Birr soccer club. My children are beyond devastated. If anyone has any information please do not hesitate to contact me 0862553738. Gardai and relevant authorities have been informed » ... See MoreSee Less

Well said Drogheda Animal rescueA MESSAGE FROM OUR FRUSTRATED DOG TEAM - Listen Up!

Folks, we are inundated with requests for puppies and they are now bordering on the ridiculous. This is echoed throughout many other rescues and even the county dog pounds.

Firstly, we are an animal rescue. We take in stray, abandoned, abused, neglected, and unwanted dogs. We don't know what each day will bring. Our mission is to help these dogs by rehabilitating them, giving the veterinary care they need, and finding the most suitable new home for them.

Also, may we remind you that we are at LEVEL 5 COVID19 restrictions, with a further tighten up on restrictions expected. We cannot facilitate the rehoming of dogs counties such as Co Wicklow, Co Wexford, Co Limerick, Co Kildare, Co Monaghan, Co Cavan, Dublin, Co Cork, etc ... and even Northern Ireland.

These are examples of some of the requests we get in for dogs:

1. Do you have Dachshund puppies? - Errr ... No, maybe one in about 20-years.

2. Do you have any Wicklow Collie pups? - Nope.

3. Do you have any French Bull Dog pups as I always wanted one of those and prefer to rescue than buy. - Afraid not, and probably won't ever have one of those unless it needs veterinary care the owner can't afford and decides to get rid of it.

4. Do you have Bichon Frise pups? - Don't think we've ever had those, only older ones with skin complaints.

5. Do you have teacup puppies? - What are those? We're an animal rescue organisation, not a china shop!

6. Do you have any hypoallergenic pups? - Well, you and everyone's auntie is looking for one of those, and the answer is a definite NO!

7. Do you have any Golden Labrador or Golden Retriever pups? - In your wildest dreams sunshine.

8. Do you have any non-shed dogs or pups? - Sounds like we are in the Christmas tree business too.

9. Do you have any pups that will like children? - No, all of our pups seem to be snappy thugs not suitable for anything under 8-years of age.

10. Do you have any Lhasa Apso ... pups? Errr ... don't think so. We don't even know how to pronounce that name!

11. Labradoodles? - NO!
12. Cockapoos? - NO!

13. I am looking for a dog that will snuggle up with me on the sofa after a long walk on the beach. I'm thinking a Maltese pup would be ideal. Have any? - Yeah, about a dozen of them in stock, let us just double check our inventory, and we'll get back to you.

14. Have any Staffie pups? - No.
15. How about Pit Bull pups? - No.
16. Do you have any Staffie or Pit Bulls at all? - Why?

17. Do you have any Whippet pups? - Afraid not. Only scabby & skinny adult Lurchers with flaky skin and worms the length of Ireland.

18. Can you put my name on a waiting list? - Nope. We haven't the resources or time to be following up such requests as we're usually very busy ... saving animals ... and we do this all in our own time as volunteers. None of us are paid and often use our own resources to help facilitate the rescue and care of animals. We are but a very small team of volunteers, and our uniforms are usually dirty from mucky paw prints, dog hair, dried dog drool, blood from occasional dog bites, and tears that we wipe away when we have to say good-bye to a dog, and lay it to rest.

We are not AMAZON! We don't have hundreds of breed specific pups on our shelves waiting to be bought and shipped out to new homes. We are an animal rescue that picks up the pieces when owners fail their dogs by placing high expectations on the dog that it cannot possibly ever fulfil. We help people to rehome their dogs when they encounter difficulties that life brings them, and they can no longer look after their dogs. We're kind of like a rescue dog's social worker.

AND, we need your understanding, patience, and support. Thank you for reading and hearing us out. Now ... for a cup of tea and a biscuit.

Cavan SPCA Charity Shop

We have a charity shop on Thomas Ashe Street, Cavan town (mint green shop front) where donations of money, items for the animals and resalable belongings can be left and wonderful items can be purchased at great prices.

   Jan 10

Animals Available for Adoption

To see up to date photos of dogs, cats and horses in our care looking for loving homes please go to our Facebook page Cavan SPCA as it is updated daily.

The adoption fee is €95 for puppies fully vaccinated, wormed and microchipped and €120 for dogs 6 months and over, neutered, fully vaccinated, wormed and microchipped.  If you cannot afford this then you cannot afford to have a dog,  to have all these things done in a vet yourself would cost a lot more than we are charging and it doesn’t even cover our costs.  We do not get all these things done for free as many people think, we get a small discount at the vets.  Too many animals are being handed in because people are saying they can’t afford them so we need to make sure the animals will go to a home that if they need veterinary care you will be able to cover the costs.
